| REPPED: The Cornucopia Institute, a non-profit organization that promotes honest food and sustainable farming practices, has revealed details of the USDA's conspiracy with agribusiness interests to mislead consumers over the sterilization of almonds. A press release from the Cornucopia Institute, reprinted below, explains that new rules concerning the pasteurization of almonds are an "inside job," made without any real opportunity for public comment. |

But since the people who run the usda, EPA and FDA are the very same people who occupy top positions in the most powerful agricultural organizations in the world, the U.S. government has no intention whatsoever to protect the public from financial exploitation by influential corporations (regardless of the cost to the future of life on planet Earth). It's the same story with Big Pharma, as you no doubt already realize.

I suspect, however, that the real explanation here is nothing more complicated than mass incompetence by the ABC, usda, FDA and just about every government agency with 3 or 4 letters. Real knowledge about the nutritional value of living foods remains disturbingly rare. Conventional medicine still hasn't even accepted the idea that the human body has any real nutritional needs whatsoever (except, perhaps, for basic synthetic vitamins to prevent rickets and pellagra). |

And drug companies now exercise astonishing degrees of control over the FDA, the usda, the DEA, medical schools, doctors, media outlets and non-profit groups.
The way out
How do we end this medical madness? First, we've all got to come to our senses and stop believing every mood, habit or challenge in our lives is caused by some mysterious disorder. People need to start taking responsibility for their own behavior and stop blaming fictitious diseases (or bad genes) when things don't work out the way they want. |

Fraudulent marketing, illegal labeling
The Almond Board of California is right now conspiring with the usda to allow the fraudulent labeling of almonds that are being sold to consumers. How? Pasteurized, fumigated or cooked almonds will be openly labeled as "raw" almonds. As you can see from previous stories published by NewsTarget on this issue, the Almond Board of California recognizes no substantial difference between cooked and raw almonds, and thus does not see any need to distinguish between them on product packaging. |

It's because the Bush Administration has made it illegal for beef ranchers to test their own cows for mad cow disease. The usda actually sued one rancher that tried to conduct safety testing in order to comfort his overseas buyers of U.S. beef. U.S. authorities said, nope, we can't have any more safety testing in this country unless the feds conduct it -- in which case the government can cover up all the positive mad cow detection results and pretend that U.S. beef is perfectly safe for mass consumption.

Just look at the FDA, usda, FTC, FCC, NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and most other government regulatory bodies and you'll find a room full of politicians and bureaucrats who utterly disregard the People while prioritizing the financial needs of influential corporations.
Our nation's policies on health, finances, agricultural, national defense and even education are increasingly slanted towards enriching the corporations, usually at the expense of the People. |

It's a replacement for the USDA's highly corrupt and manipulated Food Guide Pyramid, which is little more than a marketing document for the dairy industry and big food corporations. The Honest Food Guide is an independent, nutritionally-sound reference document that reveals exactly what to eat (and what to avoid) to maximize your health. |

You can hardly pick up an over-the-counter medication at a convenience store without seeing some scary chemical on the ingredients list.
The usda, meanwhile, openly allows U.S. farmers to inject cattle with hormones and antibiotics that are banned in most other countries, and the agency even has an open policy of allowing U.S. cattle to be fed chicken poop, roadkill, euthanized pets, and until recently, brain and spinal fluids from other dead, diseased cows. So what happens when consumers eating this stuff suffer bizarre neurological disorders like the human form of mad cow disease? |
| Sodium nitrite is a clear example of a toxic ingredient that has no real use other than turning dead meats a pretty pink color, and yet neither the FDA nor usda have taken any interest in attempting to ban this ingredient from foods.
Why China should ban most U.S. processed foods
Technically, China should ban all processed meat imports from the United States, given that such meats contain detectable levels of cancer-causing chemicals in the form of sodium nitrite (and MSG, usually). |

It's an accurate description of what's happening in America today: The public is no longer represented by the Senate, the FDA, the usda or the EPA. Instead, each of these governmental bodies (legislative for the Senate, executive for the other departments) is now operating in the interests of corporations. Campaign finance reform, of course, is impossible under such circumstances, since no corporate-controlled Senate will ever vote to cut itself off from corporate money. Thus, the only outcome of the situation is a further erosion of the integrity of U.S. |

America are not getting the daily recommended amount of fiber in their diet; fewer than 11 percent of Americans consume the usda recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day; junk foods such as chips, snacks, desserts, and soft drinks now constitute 30 percent of the American daily food intake. Fruits and vegetables no longer pack the nutritional wallop they once did; their nutrient value has declined as much as 38 percent since 1950. |

| If you were to follow the usda Food Guide Pyramid and eat the foods it recommends for years or decades, you would no doubt find yourself being diagnosed with various chronic diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies. Nowhere does the usda Food Guide Pyramid recommend that these should be whole, unprocessed foods. Nowhere does it talk about healthy oils or putting raw vegetables high on the list. Nowhere does it talk about the dangers of refined grains, added sugars or chemical additives such as sodium nitrate, MSG, or artificial colors. |
| Some people might say, "Well, you should look to the usda Food Guide Pyramid in order to find out what a balanced meal is." Okay. So let's do that for a second. Let's take a look at that Food Guide Pyramid. This pyramid, which was created primarily as a response to political influence by various food groups (read "Food Politics" by Marion Nestle to learn more), is little more than a promotional brochure for the farmers of America. It promotes the dairy industry, the grain farmers, meat producers and various food producers. But the number one recommendation by the usda is of course the grains. |

USDA recommendation: "Keep total fat intake between 20 to 35 percent of calories, with most fats coming from sources of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat, such as fish, nuts, and vegetable oils."
This recommendation is of major concern. In effect, your government is suggesting a level of fat consumption that cannot arrest vascular disease and—quite the contrary—has actually been shown to promote it. In Chapter 10, I will discuss the documented harmful effects of monounsaturated oils. But fish consumption poses a set of dangers all its own. |
| And as recently as October 2000, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine successfully litigated to find out exactly who was compensating the members of the USDA's U.S. Dietary Guidelines Committee. It turned out that six of the eleven committee members, including the chairman, had financial ties to the food industry.
In my opinion, the Department of Agriculture, which by definition is supposed to protect and promote the nation's agricultural interests, should disqualify itself from responsibility for setting nutrition standards. |
| USDA recommendation: "Consume less than 10 percent of calories from saturated fat and less than 300 mg/day of cholesterol, and keep trans-fatty acid consumption as low as possible."
This is strange, impractical advice. I don't know of any food scientist, nutritionist, physician, or other expert who, on a daily basis, would go to the enormous trouble of calculating how many calories' worth of saturated fat they are ingesting, or who have more than a general notion of how many milligrams of cholesterol and trans fat they consume. |
| USDA Recommendation: "Consume three cups per day of fat-free or low-fat milk or equivalent milk products."
Even low-fat milk contains significant amounts of saturated fat, which will clog arteries. In addition, fully 50 million Americans are lactose intolerant. For them, ingesting milk causes gastrointestinal upsets. Milk consumption has also been linked to the development of prostate cancer. Casein, the major protein in milk, has been shown in animal studies to powerfully promote cancer growth.5

| USDA Recommendation: "Consume three or more ounce-equivalents of whole-grain products per day, with the rest of the recommended grains coming from whole-grain products. In general, at least half the grains should come from whole grains."
In other words, the other half of the grains consumed may come from refined grains, which have lost many of their natural nutrients and fiber content—and which cause elevated levels of triglycerides in the bloodstream, a recognized risk factor in coronary artery disease.

BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS
The importance of increasing omega-3 fatty acids in diet is linked to their beneficial effects on at least two ailments that afflict Western societies: cardiovascular diseases and cancer. A consensus has been arrived at concerning the benefits associated with the consumption of foods rich in omega-3s, particularly in persons at high risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. |

As mentioned earlier, usda figures show a decline in the nutrient content of the forty-three crops it has tracked since the 1950s. In one recent analysis, vitamin C declined by 20 percent, iron by 15 percent, riboflavin by 38 percent, calcium by 16 percent. Government figures from England tell a similar story: declines since the fifties of 10 percent or more in levels of iron, zinc, calcium, and selenium across a range of food crops. |

In the mean time, you can play an important role in these three ways:
Action items
1) Contact your representatives in Washington and call, write or fax them a letter telling them strongly oppose this fraudulent action by the ABC and usda.
2) Share the cartoon: The Killing of California Almonds.
3) Share the video interview: Seth Leaf speaks out about pasteurized "raw" almonds.
Thank you for your effort. Together, we have a legitimate shot at bringing the almond industry back to its senses and restoring truly raw almonds to the marketplace. |

In August 2005, the usda dismissed these complaints.
But the situation brings up the real issue: the Wal-Mart effect when pricing pressure dilutes the integrity of what it means to be certified organic.49
All of these large farms probably were blurring the clear-cut distinctions between organic and conventional dairies if you believe that organic certification should represent the highest ideals of humane treatment of farm animals and that crowding animals and denying them normal pasturing is never an ideal. |
